This versatile and flavorful coffee comes from the legendary Tarrazu region of Costa Rica. The chocolate and maple sweetness is accentuated by a soft winey and grape acidity. It is a very well balanced cup and delicious on its own or as espresso. As espresso, it is rich, sweet and chocolate forward, making it a delightful shot as well as the perfect companion to milk.
This particular lot is from the Dota micro-region within Tarrazu, where smallholder farmers mainly grow the Caturra and Catuai varieties that are collected and processed at the Beneficio Rio Tarrazu mill. This mill combines traditional and modern technologies in order to produce the finest coffees in the world. The mill itself is a world standard for sustainable coffee processing—using hydroelectric power generated on-site and a first-of-its-kind biomass furnace which recycles the by-product of the coffee fruit as a fuel for drying the coffee. This efficiency virtually eliminates the need for forest wood. Beneficio Rio Tarrazu plays an important role in the community as well, working with small producers to educate them on fruit standards. Innovative practices also include an on-site facility for preventative medical and dental care. In 1997, Beneficio del Rio Tarrazu was awarded the Bandera Blanca by the government of Costa Rica, in recognition for the contribution to ecologically sustainable coffee processing.
